One Man's Trash...

I love free stuff!

Some local area councils in Sydney have household clean up days where the council offers extra rubbish disposal (ie not regular household waste) for all residents. We used to live in Bankstown City Council area where we affectionately referred to clean up day as "scab day". We could talk, we were out there scabbing with the best of them! From early in the morning second hand dealers would be out combing the streets for anything saleable (I guess there would now be Ebay sellers doing the same) they'd be followed by the scrap metal collectors, then would come everyone else. Of course the best time to "scab" was in the day or two before the scheduled collection date, before the "professionals" had the pick of the lot.

In our current local council area we don't have "scab day"s; the council offers a similar service but each household is allowed 4 collections per year, you ring to book a day and then put your "rubbish" out starting the day before. So instead of a scheduled day to go and find your treasure amongst someone else's trash you have to keep an eye out for piles of treasure on the roadside as you go about your daily business.

I simply cannot believe the things some people throw away; are people not aware of charities? Freecycle? "Free" signs? From roadside lots in recent months we have collected a bike for the babe, plants, pots, a rocking horse (again for the babe), stroller (redistributed via freecycle), a high chair, an exercise trampoline (again, for the babe, he can get on and off it himself and LOVES to bounce), a rocking chair, 2 chests of drawers (one good one, one for the laundry), a large amount of toys (someone had put out ALL their unsold garage sale items, what loot!) I'm always amazed at the things I can fit in my little Mazda 121. :)

I love free stuff!
